Carrie Underwood at 25th anniversary of Cedars-Sinai Sports Spectacular

The Cedars-Sinai Sports Spectacular has been heralded by the Los Angeles Times as the premier sports awards dinner in the country. This exciting charity event was established in 1986 in response to the promise of genetic research leading to the understanding of numerous genetic diseases found in children as well as adults. The Sports Spectacular has raised over $19 million to benefit the life-saving work of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Genetics Institute. The Institute’s focus is to provide expert consultation and cutting edge research to find new and improved methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment for all types of genetic disorders, including mental retardation, dwarfism, cystic fibrosis, deafness and malformation syndromes, as well as common diseases of adulthood, such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. The event also benefits the Sports Spectacular Fellowship Endowment, which supports the training of five research Fellows in various medical fields at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

One night each year, the Sports Spectacular brings together a sold-out audience of 1,800 guests, including executives from the investment banking, entertainment, legal, and sports communities, with over 80 world-class athletes. It is a time for these athletes to pay tribute to their communities, fans and to all those who suffer from a genetic birth disorder. Together, the table patrons and athletes enjoy an exclusive silent auction followed by a moving awards ceremony in tribute to the event’s chosen honorees. In its 24 year history, the Sports Spectacular has honored some of the most prestigious athletes of our nation including Muhammad Ali, Kobe Bryant, Barry Bonds, Shaquille O’Neal, Wayne Gretzky, Joe DiMaggio, Tony Hawk, Emmitt Smith, Marcus Allen, Wilt Chamberlain, Joe Montana, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Lisa Leslie, Willie Shoemaker and many more. “I Hope You Dance” Turned 10 Years Old This Month…

After positioning herself as a new traditionalist in the late 1990s, Lee Ann Womack broke through in a big, big way when her album, I Hope You Dance, was released on May 23, 2000. The title track brought her mainstream airplay, multiple awards, an inspirational book and the unique opportunity to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Norway. In other words, the Texas singer was everywhere — even selling paper towels on TV. With 3 million in sales, the album also helped a few lesser-known songwriters make a name for themselves in Nashville, including Buddy and Julie Miller (”Does My Ring Burn Your Finger”) and Bruce Robison (”Lonely Too”). As the first track, “The Healing Kind” sets an elegant tone while a respectful cover of Don Williams’ 1981 country hit, “Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good,” modestly closes the album. She hasn’t always included “I Hope You Dance” in her set list, but when I saw her open for George Strait and Reba McEntire earlier this year, she delivered a sterling rendition. I’m happy about that. As the Opry stars like to say, you should dance with the one that brought you.

Though you’d like to see the video!!!!!

Mindy McCready’s Mom Overreacted

As TMZ reports:

Mindy McCready’s rep tells TMZ the singer did not OD on drugs — she just had a bad reaction to a painkiller and her mom “overreacted.”

Brent Young, Mindy’s rep, tells us she broke her toe 2 days ago and has been complaining about the pain.

We’re told Mindy’s mom gave her four Darvocet pills this morning. Darvocet is a narcotic painkiller.

Young says Mindy told her mom that she wasn’t feeling well — possibly from a bad reaction to the Darvocet — and her mom “overreacted” and called 911.

McCready and her mom have been fighting over custody of Mindy’s son. Young says McCready’s mom may have simply been trying to make her custody argument stronger by calling the paramedics.

Young says he just spoke with Mindy, saying, “She’s totally coherent. She can’t believe her mom did this.”

Young says, Mindy wants him to call Dr. Drew to say she hasn’t fallen off the wagon.

UPDATE: Dr. Drew Pinsky just told TMZ … he’s spoken with Mindy over the last few days and there was “no evidence of any relapse.” Pinsky says the Darvocet was an appropriate med for her pain.
